Thanet has become the go-to place for film crews in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why.

The isle has multiple stunning bays that make for the perfect backdrop for a silver screen performance, while historic maritime culture and impressive architecture help provide productions with a vintage 19th or 20th century feel.

Here are some of the productions that have come to Thanet over the last year, and where they filmed to get the best shots.

The Darling Buds of May - ITV

Filming for the remake of this classic series has been spotted in Margate and Broadstairs, as well as the Walpole bay hotel from late June to early July in 2021. The show’s six-part rebirth will now star ‘The Chase’ host Bradley Walsh, ‘The Thick of It’ actress Joanna Scanlan and famous ‘Doctor Who’ Doctor Peter Davison.

The show was a hit with viewers between 1991 and 1993 when it starred ‘Only Fools and Horses’ legend David Jason, and now ITV has chosen Thanet as the perfect location to be part of the much-anticipated reboot 30 years on.

Breeders - Sky

The second series of the hit TV show was spotted filming at Viking Bay and Louisa Bay in Broadstairs in September 2020. Sky also took shots at the funicular coffeehouse at the top of Viking bay and at the Royal Parade. The crew were also spotted walking outside the Royal Albion Hotel during the times of filming.

The show stars ‘Sherlock’ and ‘The Hobbit’ star Martin Freeman and well-known ‘Harry Potter’ actress Daisy Haggard, who were both spotted on the Isle last year. The first series of the Sky original proved to be a massive hit with viewers, and now Thanet locals can spot some of the Isle’s well-known landmarks in multiple parts of the second series.

Liaison - Apple TV

It’s recently been announced that streaming service Apple TV has been spotted filming in Thanet, specifically in the Royal Harbour Brasserie at Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour. Apple’s first French and English speaking original ‘Liaison’ has been called a ‘high stakes, contemporary thriller’ and is being directed by Emmy award winner Stephen Hopkins.

The new series also includes A-listers such as ‘Westworld’ and ‘Black Swan’ star Vincent Cassel as well as ‘The Luminaries’ and ‘Casino Royale’ actress Eva Green. The Royal Harbour Brasserie was taken over to film the much anticipated new thriller, which chose Thanet as the perfect filming location.
